Parrebbe ovvio inscrivere la riflessione di Nicolai Hartmann all'interno del realismo gnoseologico, sorto come istanza antiidealistica e antisoggettivistica, secondo cui le cose non sono determinate dall'atto conoscitivo ma esistono e si danno indipendentemente dal soggetto conoscente. La questione non è così semplice, perché la teoria del conoscere va qui intesa in modo funzionale all'impostazione ontologica del suo pensiero, all'affermazione dell'eccedenza dell'oggetto in sé rispetto all'oggetto conosciuto. Se il precedente lavoro di Giuseppe D'Anna ha avuto per tema il passaggio "dal conoscere all'essere", concentrandosi sui Principi di una metafisica della conoscenza (1921) di Hartmann, qui lo scavo va a fondo del realismo osservato dal suo interno, nelle sue aporie e nel rapporto con l'ontologia, soprattutto in riferimento a La fondazione dell'ontologia (1935). Ponendosi al di qua dell'opposizione tra realismo e idealismo, queste pagine riescono a mostrare, insieme alla debolezza di una ingenua (prefilosofica) formulazione del realismo, l'attualità e la profondità della teoria della conoscenza di Hartmann anche rispetto al dibattito contemporaneo
