The contributors of this volume demonstrate how a highly developed expertise in interpreting Biblical and cognate literature is a substantial part of the overall discourse on the historical, literary, social, political, and religious dimensions of trauma in past and present. This idea is based on the assumption that trauma is not only a modern concept which derives from 20th century psychiatry: It is an ancient phenomenon already which predates modern discourses. Trauma studies will thus profit from how Theology - specifically Biblical exegesis - and the Humanities deal with trauma in terms of religion, history, sociology, and politics.

On the basis of the latest methods in New Testament scholarship, the battle over Yes and No to this question is waged within these pages. In the end, no agreement is reached, but the basic issues and their impact on studying epistolary and narrative literature in 1st-century Christianity stand out with much greater clarity than before.

20ths century research in St. Paul is widely impacted by Adolf Deissmann’s prominent view on the apostle as a “homo novus” (1911). But where does this concept originate from, and what does it imply? This collection of articles does not only re-evaluate Deissmann’s concept by tracing it back to its historical and socio-political origins in Cicero and exploring how authors from (early) Imperial Time perceive and transform the homo novus paradigm by diverse modes and strategies of literary self-fashioning. Scholars ranging the fields of New Testament Studies, Greek and Latin Philology, Ancient History, Patristics, and Comparative Literature also examine how the Ciceronian paradigm was early on transformed, disseminated, and applied as a literary concept and an authorial topos of self-molding. One of the leading questions throughout the volume thus is: How do authors like Cicero, Horace, Paul, Tacitus, Seneca, Athanasius, and Augustine fashion themselves in accordance to or in difference from the idea of being a “new man”? It is argued that by means of literary self-configuration, indeed, some of these writers – such as Paul and Augustine – want to appear as “new men” by either altering traditional social, moral, religious, or political roles, or by creating new patterns of social behavior and religious self-understanding.

Die Beiträger und Beiträgerinnen dieses Bandes fragen nach den Formen und der Veränderung von Autorkonzepten speziell in religiösen Texten griechisch-römischer, frühjüdischer und frühchristlicher Provenienz im antiken Mittelmeerraum. In zwölf Fallstudien, die zeit- und literaturgeschichtlich von Ben Sira bis zu Tertullian reichen, werden die Vorstellungen von individueller Produktion von und Verantwortung für literarische Texte und die Selbstinszenierung des Verfassers als eines orthonym, anonym oder pseudepigraph tätigen Autors untersucht. Der Autor sieht sich zugleich als religiöser Akteur. So stellt sich die Frage: Was können wir über einen antiken literarisch wie religiös ambitionierten Autor und sein Selbstverständnis in Erfahrung bringen? Die in diesem Band im Rahmen der antiken Religionsgeschichte erprobte Autorforschung, die literarische Texte als auktorial geformte „religiöse Texte“ wahrnimmt, ermöglicht zugleich wertvolle Einsichten in die Erzeugung von religiösem Wissen und in die individuelle literarische Tätigkeit von „religiösen“ Akteuren.

Having presented a brief history of research on 2 Corinthians, Eve-Marie Becker outlines the process of Paul's communication with the Corinthian community and considers letter-production and letter-reception at the time. She develops a "literary-historical" model for reconstructing the original separate letters (1.1-7.4; 7.5-16; 8--9; 10--13) which were later compiled to form the canonical letter. She defines - by means of linguistics and communication theory - the central theoretical elements for Pauline letter-hermeneutics. There is a thorough exegesis of those parts of 2 Corinthians in which Paul formulates aspects of his hermeneutics, based on the theory of letter-hermeneutics and on the results of the "literary-historical" reconstruction of the original form of 2 Corinthians. There is also an examination of the reception and interpretation of 2 Corinthians in the early church. This is volume 279 in the Journal for the Study of the New Testament Supplement series.

In dieser Situation war ein Überblick über die Vielfalt hermeneutischen Entwürfe der verschiedenen Epochen der Geschichte der christlichen Kirchen und Konfessionen bisher ein Desiderat. Das HBH bietet eine nach Epochen gegliederte Übersicht über die wichtigen Bibelhermeneutiken von Origenes ( De principiis IV) bis zu den aktuellen Entwürfen der letzten Jahre. Jeder Text wird bibliographisch, formal und thematisch erschlossen und in seinen historischen und theologischen Zusammenhang gestellt. Mit diesem Werk wird zum ersten Mal der Zugang zu allen wichtigen bibelhermeneutischen Texte für Bibelwissenschaftler, Kirchenhistoriker, systematische und praktische Theologen ermöglicht.

Die Studie von Eve-Marie Becker beleuchtet das frühchristliche Geschichtsbewusstsein und dessen literarische Entwicklung im Kontext der hellenistischen Erinnerungskulturen und Geschichtsschreibung. Sie untersucht die Entstehung der neutestamentlichen Schriften zwischen dem ersten und frühen zweiten Jahrhundert und identifiziert bereits bei Paulus Ansätze eines geschichtlichen Denkens. Becker analysiert die konzeptionellen Ursprünge der Geschichtsschreibung von Markus bis Lukas und zeigt auf, wie die früheste christliche Erzählliteratur das Verständnis von Geschichte im Christentum entscheidend prägt.
