Nejúspěšnějším Crébillonův román je "Blouznění srdce a rozumu" (1736-1738). Sedmnáctiletý šlechtic Melcour v něm vypráví o svém vstupu do společnosti, o tápáních a nejistotách, které přitom prožívá. Touží poznat cit lásky v ryzí podobě, ale místo s citovostí se Melcour setkává jen s citovým chladem a hrou, místo s láskou s vypočítavostí, ješitností a cynismem. Crébillon tak nepřímo soudí svou společnost jako svět bez budoucnosti . který si svou zahálčivostí a rozkošnictvím připravuje vlastní zkázu. Náznakem pravé lásky, jež pro hrdinu zůstává neproniknutelným citem, je krásná Hortense, tvořící se svou neznámou společnicí dvojici jako vystřiženou z rokokové rytiny Watteauovy a v protikladu k Meilcourovu poblouznění citovým zmatkům obestřená melancholickou moudrostí a vyvážeností citu a rozumu.
