The topic of 'religion' poses a challenge for the research on Nubia insofar as the world of ideas has been eminently shaped and transformed by the intense contacts with the Egyptian culture. The deities in most cases appear in Egyptian habitus, the temples and relics of their cult display the forms of those of the neighbour in the north. In this synopsis on the deities venerated, on cult practice, concepts of the hereafter and mortuary customs, it is attempted to outline the characteristic Nubian connection of in­digenous, Egyptian and later also Hellenistic dimensions. The chronological organisation of the chapters reflects the development. The splitting up in chapters on the 25th dynasty, in which the Nubian rulers were essentially active in Egypt, the Napatan period, which was still intensely influenced by Egyptian concepts, and the Meroitic period with its stronger emphasis on native elements, outlines the central concepts, as well as also short-lived manifestations, of the Kushite religion. -- Provided by publisher, page 4 of cover

Elephantine XXII beinhaltet die Funde, die in der von 1987-1992 von Achim Krekeler geleiteten Grabung des DAI Kairo gemacht wurden. Das Stadtareal umfasst hier insgesamt sieben archäologische Schichten, die vom späten Neuen Reich bis in die Römerzeit reichen. Von den insgesamt ca. 6000 Einzelfunden sind in dieser Bearbeitung knapp 1850 aufgenommen. Rundplastik, Schmuck, Siegelabdrücke und Einlegearbeiten wurden von Ingrid Nebe bearbeitet. Körperpflegeutensilien und Bekleidung, Modelle und Spiele, Gefäßverschlüsse und nichtkeramische Gefäße, Geräte und Waffen, Fibeln, eine Waage und Gewichte sowie Möbel und Diverses sind von Josefine Kuckertz untersucht worden. Zum Kapitel über beschriftete Objekte haben beide Autorinnen beigetragen. In der Regel sind die Funde nach ihrer Funktion geordnet, erst, wenn dies nicht möglich war, ist eine Sortierung nach dem Material vorgenommen worden. In Tabellenform sind die jeweils relevanten Daten zu einem Objekt erfasst, komplettiert durch die Zuordnung zu einer Bauschicht.
