Each fragment is accompanied by discussions on its date, origin, and interpretation, as well as its connection to canonical texts. Detailed commentaries are included to support further research and exploration of these critical early Christian writings.

When exactly did the Parting of the Ways between Jews and Christians take place? Was it already Jesus who separated himself and his followers from the Jews ? Or did Paul with his mission of pagans make the decisive step? Or do we have to wait longer until after 70 CE, when the Jerusalem Temple was destroyed? In his new book, which goes back to the 2013 Deichmann lectures at Ben Gurion University, Beersheva, Tobias Nicklas shows that the above question is formulated inadequately. Instead, one has to distinguish between the situations of different groups (and even individuals) in different historical circumstances. To show this, Nicklas discusses images of Jews in early Christian writings, concepts of Israel's God and his Covenant with Israel, Christological and Ecclesiological hermeneutics of the Scriptures, and matters of Halakha for believers in Christ.

While the so-called ”New perspective in Paul“ has been in the focus of New Testament exegesis for more than 25 years now, ancient interpretations of Pauline texts and ideas have been neglected widely. The present volume aims to fill this gap. Its articles concentrate on three different foci of modern exegesis: interpretations of Paul’s conversion, his ideas about the relation of “grace” and “works” and the fate of Israel. Several additional articles contrast these ancient perspectives with answers of modern exegesis.

As environmental destruction begins to seriously affect humans, it has become increasingly relevant to reflect on the essential elements of the Jewish and Christian theologies of creation. The essays in this volume explore key aspects of creation theology, which poses the question of the origin of the world and of man. Creation theology is rooted in the concept of man who owes his existence to God and who is placed in a cosmos which God created as “good”. The main focus of the collection lies on early Jewish and ancient Christian sources (3rd century B. C. E. - 3rd century C. E.). The remarkably complex textual traditions of the Acts of the Apostles reflect the theological developments and socio-cultural framework of early Christianity. The present volume contains studies of textual witnesses, textual traditions and translations of the Acts. They do not only focus on the traditions which occur in the manuscripts, or on the theological tendencies of the major ancient versions and their reception in the Early Church, but also consider the relevance of mostly neglected witnesses such as amuletts and tablets, and the relationship between the ancient translators and Jewish exegetical traditions.

Der vorliegende Sammelband steht im Kontext des interdisziplinären Großprojekts "Novum Testamentum Patristicum". Er bündelt die methodischen Perspektiven von Bibel- und Liturgiewissenschaft, Patrologie und Musikwissenschaft ebenso wie innovative Zugänge zu Kodikologie und materialer Kultur. Er geht der Verwendung der Bibel in der Vielfalt liturgischer Gattungen nach und reflektiert ihre hermeneutischen Voraussetzungen; dabei berücksichtigt er die ökumenische und sprachliche Breite der verschiedenen Riten der Christenheit in Ost und West in der formativen Phase des ersten Jahrtausends: von Äthiopien bis Spanien, von Syrien über Byzanz und Rom bis nach Gallien.

In diesem Zusammenhang wird allerdings kaum über die Bedeutung von Grenzüberschreitungen reflektiert, obwohl zahlreiche jüngere Publikationen zum frühen und spätantiken Christentum den Fokus auf Phänomene der Transgressivität legen. Dieser Sammelband verbindet nun beide Diskurse (zu religiöser Identität und zu Transgressivität) verbinden, indem er anhand zahlreicher Beispiele der Frage nachgeht: Welche Rolle haben in den ersten Jahrhunderten Grenzüberschreitungen für die religiöse Identitätsbildung gespielt? Sind Grenzüberschreitungen für religiöse Identitäten genauso wichtig wie Grenzziehungen? Bibliker und Kirchenhistoriker suchen anhand zahlreicher Beispiele Antworten auf diese Frage.
