Queer Threads: Crafting Identity and Community showcases twenty-nine artists who are moving through the narrow space that is gay or straight, biological or social, craft and fine art and doing so explicitly through their work in fiber and textile. Loaded with gender connotations and power hierarchies, fiber-based handicrafts such as crochet, embroidery, knitting, macrame, quilting, and sewing provide a fitting platform for examining tastes, roles, and relationships socialized within and around gay and lesbian culture, as well as our reactions to the traditional home and cultures in which we were raised. This book evolves from an exhibition of the same name, that John Chaich curated in 2014 at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay & Lesbian Art in New York City, the first dedicated LGBTQ art museum in the world with a mission to exhibit and preserve LGBTQ art and foster the artists who create it. While other recent, high-profile fiber and textile exhibitions have featured several of the artists in Queer Threads, the Leslie-Lohman exhibition marked the first time these works were shown together to specifically examine the works queerness. To further examine how queerness informs each featured artist's work in fiber and textiles, or vice versa, this book features interviewers from the worlds of music, fashion, media, dance, museums, and scholarship who are makers and thinkers themselves, many members of the queer community if not powerful allies. The resulting dialogues are as fun, challenging, personal, and universal as the ideas in the works discussed
Design guru and art collector Todd Oldham shines the spotlight on the clever and warped world of artist Wayne White. From Wayne's early days as a production designer and puppet maker for the iconic TV show "Pee-Wee's Playhouse" to his unmistakable and exquisitely rendered text paintings, this monograph is a comprehensive view of Wayne White's oeuvre. Wayne is a unique wordsmith, brilliantly juxtaposing irreverent and humorous phrases over existing thrift store paintings that together create a completely original and fictional landscape. Influenced by both his upbringing in rural Tennessee and a very sophisticated knowledge of art history. Wayne White's sensibility is completely singular and distinctive. Wayne White's warped and perspectival words integrate into seemingly benign pastoral landscapes, creating a completely surreal experience. Wayne's expert painting chops and detailed attention to lighting and reflection place the "new" text directly in its "original" setting. Text paintings such as "Donald Judd was a Son of a Bitch Wrecked His Train in a Whorehouse Ditch," "Poon," and "Maybe Now I'll Get The Respect I So Richly Deserve" are a welcome departure from the more-often-than-not self-aggrandizing art world.
Gerald Davis's photography captures the quirky essence of Palm Beach society, showcasing a blend of celebrities, eccentric locals, and unusual events. His work features striking images, such as a glamorous socialite with her cat, highlighting both elegance and irony. Compiled by Todd Oldham, this collection presents a humorous and revealing glimpse into the lives of the rich and bizarre in Florida, including notable figures like Elizabeth Taylor and whimsical scenes like a waterskiing squirrel. The unique and unexpected moments in Davis's portfolio offer a delightful exploration of culture and character.
Ed Emberley shies away from calling himself an artist and instead likes to say that he draws pictures for a living. Now in his eighties, Ed Emberley is a Caldecott award-winning children s book illustrator and writer who has been creating original books since the 1960s. He has written and illustrated more than 100 books and is perhaps best known for his beloved how-to-draw books for kids such as: "Ed Emberley s Big Green Drawing Book," "Ed Emberley s Drawing Book of Faces," and "Ed Emberley s Great Thumbprint Drawing Book," and many others. These simple and straightforward books, first published in the 1970s, have encouraged a generation of kids to take the drawing process step by step. Contemporary working artists today often cite Ed Emberley as a beloved early inspiration in their development as artists. By encouraging kids to draw using just a few simple shapes, Emberley has made drawing and creating accessible to everyone. As Emberley likes to say, Not everyone needs to be an artist, but everyone needs to feel good about themselves. This definitive monograph on the wide repertoire of Emberley s life s work has been beautifully put together by Todd Oldham and Caleb Neelon. Highlighting work spanning over five decades, this gorgeous and comprehensive book celebrates the talented and prolific life of Ed Emberley."

For years the enfant terrible of juried annuals, American Illustration turns 30! Created in 1982 to turn heads and eyeballs away from the more established and conventional tomes of the day, American Illustration set out to honor the underrepresented artists--those who were creating a new visual language in the illustration and fine art worlds. In this anniversary edition, American Illustration 30 presents the best collection of alternative work being created by today's emerging and established artists, some of whom helped define the publication three decades ago. Included are 316 images selected by a jury of design professionals from over 7,000 submitted to the annual competition. This year's jury made up of top creative professionals included: Nicholas Blechman, The New York Times Book Review; Rachael Cole, Schwartz & Wade Books; Michael Ian Kaye, Mother Design; Todd Oldham, Todd Oldham Studio; D.W. Pine, Time magazine; David Saylor, Scholastic; and Dean Sebring, Worth magazine.
