To many Europeans, security seems less stable today than a decade ago, with evolving challenges to internal security significantly impacting public perceptions of safety. Critical issues include juvenile delinquency, hooliganism, violence at public events, rising anti-foreigner sentiments, international organized crime, transnational banditry, and the exploitation of migrants by traffickers. This work offers an overview of these pressing challenges in public discourse and advocates for a broader understanding of internal security, emphasizing the importance of context when analyzing crime statistics or discussing foreign offenders. Two chapters focus on preventing public insecurity, while the final chapter examines the situation in Switzerland. The study concludes that public concerns about insecurity warrant serious attention and highlights the need to move beyond traditional police jurisdiction and national borders to address future security needs. It argues that security efforts must tackle both international and local challenges that shape feelings of safety and impact actual public safety conditions. Ultimately, internal security has evolved into an international issue requiring coordinated local, European, and global responses.
