The Munich-based painter is best known for Die Pflanze in Kunst und Gewerbe (The Plant in Art and Trade), which incorporated plants into decorative patterns, and Das Thier in Der Decorativen Kunst (Animals in Decorative Art), which similarly integrated animals and mythical dragons into ornamental motifs. Fifty full-page plates from an 1899 publication offer a rich profusion of everyday items rendered in the distinctive Art Nouveau style: pitchers and vases, cutlery, walking sticks, jewelry, and other artifacts.

Anton Seder gilt als einer der befähigtsten Künstler des Jugendstils. Mit seiner Serie „Die Pflanze in Kunst und Gewerbe“ setzte er Maßstäbe. Die sehr dekorativen und farbenfrohen Bilder sind hier im Großformat reproduziert und wirken auf den ersten Blick wie spannende Wimmelbilder. Über seine Kunst sagte er selbst: „Einfache Pflanzen oder Innenmotive … werden in fein abgestimmten, meist gebrochenen Farben nach den Grundregeln der Farbenlehre, dazu verwendet, den zu dekorierenden Raum möglichst groß und doch behaglich erscheinen zu lassen.“ Alle verwendeten Bilder entstammen dem Band aus dem Jahre 1886: „Die Pflanze in Kunst und Gewerbe. Unter Mitwirkung hervorragender Künstler, herausgegeben von Martin Gerlach“.
