Munthe was a true Renaissance man a scientist and doctor as well as a poet who was a friend of Henry James, Somerset Maugham, and others. In this 1929 volume, he offers an account of San Michele, a house he built on the site of Roman emperor Tiberius's villa on the Isle of Capri off Italy's southern coast. His weaving of the story of the house with Italian history, mythology, and culture is reminiscent of 18th- and 19th-century travelogs. This book was a smash in several languages for many years. It is now considered a modern classic.

Švédskeho lekára, spisovateľa a pacifistu Axela Muntheho preslávila jeho autobiografická práca Kniha o San Michele. Bol to človek, ktorý v ľuďoch na Capri, kde strávil etapu svojho života, zanechal hlboký dojem. Na pamiatku toho, je v záhrade jeho vily v Anacapri vybudovaný malý altánok s fotografiami a ďalšími predmetmi, ktoré ho pripomínajú. Zaujímavosťou je, že autor počas Druhej svetovej vojny pôsobil v radoch Červeného kríža. Kniha o San Michele bole preložená do vyše štyridsiatich jazykov. Alex Munthe v nej opisuje každodenný život obyvateľov i svoj vlastný, pričom hlavnou hrdinkou je poštárka Anna Maria Portalettere, ktorá doručovala obyvateľom Anacapri poštu a pri tom prekonávala veľký výškový rozdiel, nehovoriac o osemsto tzv. fenických schodoch.
