Stepniaks erklärtes Ziel war es, Unterstützung für die revolutionäre Bewegung seines Landes ausserhalb von Russland zu finden und die Revolutionäre von anderswo über die Geschehnisse in Russland zu informieren. Schliesslich erschien 1893 in Russland eine von ihm selbst angefertigte Übersetzung, die unter den jungen russischen Revolutionären extrem populär wurde. Sein Buch wird heute in Russland nach wie vor als Klassiker der Narodniki-Bewegung betrachtet.
