In einer Postkutsche macht sich der Kaufmann Jacob Petersen im August 1809 von Flensburg auf nach Hamburg. Zurück führt ihn und seine kleine Reisegesellschaft der Weg über Lübeck, Eutin, Plön, Kiel und Schleswig. Was ursprünglich als Geschäftsreise geplant war, gewinnt mit der Zeit immer mehr den Charakter einer bürgerlichen Lust- und Bildungsreise. Daran hat nicht zuletzt die charmante Reisebegleitung, Madame B., regen Anteil.
