Sport was an integral part of life in camps during the twentieth century, even in Nazi concentrations camps or in the Soviet Gulag. Traditionally perceived as a symbol of equality, play, and peacefulness, sport under such unexpected circumstances irritates most observers, back then and today. This volume studies the irritating fact of sport in penal and internment camps as an important insight into the history of camps. The authors enquire into case studies of sport being played in different forms of camps around the globe and throughout the twentieth century. They challenge our understanding of camps, question the dichotomy of insiders and outsiders, inner-camp hierarchies, and the everyday experience of violence. This fresh perspective complements the existing camp studies and gives way for the subjectivity of camp inmates and their action.

Starting point for this publication is a critique of the unreflected instrumentalisation of ›European Memory‹ as exposed in current public and academic discourse. In order to respond to this pernicious tendency, the contributions to this volume develop an approach that accentuates the polyphony and multiple layers of memory. Rather than understanding ›European Memory‹ as a normative ideal or an empirical concept for days of remembrance, museums, or schoolbooks, this approach perceives ›European Memory‹ as a discursive reality of which academia is an integral part. It manifests itself whenever actors pick up ‘Europe’ in their interpretations of the past. Covering a broad spectrum of European memory ranging from the Vikings to the Srebrenica massacre, the volume includes very different attributes of European self-descriptions and enquires into the entanglements of memory in present and past that are linked with these interpretations.

Kulturelle Souveranitat erschliesst gesellschaftliches und politisches Handeln aus Sicht der jeweiligen Akteure und entwickelt so einen kulturwissenschaftlichen Zugang zu einem zentralen Konzept europaischer Geschichte

Aus der Erfahrung einer Krise der spätsozialistischen Gesellschaft heraus suchten Oppositionelle in Polen, der Tschechoslowakei und Ungarn nach neuen Konzepten politischer Ordnung und Gemeinschaft. In der Untergrundliteratur des Samizdat verbanden sie die diskursive Realität Nation mit oppositionellen Kernthemen wie Freiheit und Menschenrechte und entwickelten auf diese Weise einen eigenen Nationsbegriff. In vergleichender und transnationaler Perspektive analysiert Gregor Feindt Dynamiken und Grenzen politischen Denkens sowie Konsequenzen für das Handeln der heterogenen Opposition in Ostmitteleuropa. Indem sie außerdem die Verflechtung Oppositioneller mit dem Westen einbezieht, erweitert die Arbeit situativ die ostmitteleuropäische Perspektive.
