The essays in this collection seek to bring together current developments in ecocriticism and the pedagogical practice of teaching English at all levels, from primary schools to Higher Education. They cover theoretical and practical discussions of the nexus between the sciences and the humanities and maintain that the notion of the two cultures be refused for good, they argue for the inclusion of particular texts or theoretical perspectives, and they suggest ways to teaching environments on different levels of language competence and in the context of historical and transdisciplinary encounters with ecology, nature, and animals. Despite this variety, they share some common threads and engage with questions that are highly relevant for teaching in general and have acquired even more relevance in our rapidly changing and posthumanist teaching environments: How do we raise consciousness without preaching? What kind of critical attitude is required for the empowerment of our pupils and students? How do we actually imagine encounters between the sciences and the (post)humanities, and which texts, what kind of texts, and which approaches will prove most fruitful?

Exploring the intersection of literature and climate change, this work delves into how narratives shape our understanding of environmental issues. It presents a transcultural approach, highlighting diverse texts that reflect ecological concerns across different cultures. The book emphasizes pedagogical strategies for teaching these themes, aiming to foster critical thinking and awareness among students. By analyzing various literary models, it offers insights into how literature can inspire action and promote ecological consciousness in an increasingly interconnected world.

The present collection takes stock of posthumanism and its theoretical development and impact in the field of Anglophone literary and cultural studies, with a particular focus on its role in education and the practice of teaching English. Posthumanism informs work in environmental or ecological criticism, climate change research, or human-animal studies – and poses an educational challenge since it also affects curricular and pedagogic theory and practice. Moreover, humanist idea(l)s of subject formation and individually acquired competences have a direct bearing on conceptions of education. This is why the volume interrogates the potentials and pitfalls of posthumanist pedagogies and its connections with digitization, multiliteracies, non-European and non-anthropocentric thinking, and the role of literature pedagogy more generally, presenting case studies of teaching the posthuman from primary to tertiary levels.

Der vorliegende Band versucht, zwei Elemente didaktischer Theorie und Praxis miteinander zu verbinden, die derzeit beide im Zentrum gesamtgesellschaftlicher, wissenschaftlicher und schulischer Aufmerksamkeit stehen, gleichermaßen jedoch zahlreiche Fragen zur gegenseitigen Beziehung und zur spezifischen pädagogischen wie fachdidaktischen Umsetzung aufwerfen: Inklusion und Nachhaltigkeit. Dazu werden zuerst Überlegungen und kritische Reflektionen inklusions- und nachhaltigkeitsorientierter Forschung und Praxis skizziert und schließlich Vorschläge und theoretische wie empirische Ansätze vorgestellt, die aufzeigen, wie ein zeitgemäßer, inklusions- und nachhaltigkeitsorientierter Englischunterricht gestaltet sein kann.

Eine der größten Herausforderungen für die englische Fachdidaktik wie auch für die Schulpädagogik insgesamt in der nächsten Zeit ist zweifelsohne die Implementierung des Konzepts der Inklusion. Die Beiträge in diesem Band widmen sich den Herausforderungen und Chancen aus transdisziplinärer Perspektive und diskutieren Ansätze, Konzepte und Erfahrungen mit Englischunterricht im inklusiven und förderpädagogischen Kontext. Dabei spielen spezifische Förderbedarfe ebenso eine Rolle wie die Heterogenität inklusiver Klassen.
