Nearly 25 years have passed since eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) has been recognized as an own, distinct entity. Initial doubts about the existence of this new disease were quickly eliminated by its dramatic increase. Despite intensive research activities with meanwhile more than 300 scientific publications per year, essential questions of pathogenesis and therapy are still unclear today. Nevertheless, it is worthwhile to draw up an interim balance. The purpose of this 2nd edition is to summarize the key parameters of EoE in an understandable way to empower clinicians to care for EoE patients.

Knapp 25 Jahre sind vergangen, seit die Eosinophile Ösophagitis (EoE) als eigenständiges Krankheitsbild erkannt worden ist. Heute belegen Fallberichte aus allen Kontinenten, dass die EoE weltweit zu einem relevanten Problem geworden ist und sowohl Patienten, Ärzte als auch Gesundheitssysteme erheblich belastet. Trotz intensiver Forschungstätigkeit mit mittlerweile über 300 wissenschaftlichen Publikationen pro Jahr sind wesentliche Fragen der Pathogenese und der Therapie auch heute noch nicht restlos geklärt. Trotzdem lohnt es sich, eine Zwischenbilanz zu ziehen. Dieses Buch hat das Ziel, die wesentlichen Eckpunkte der EoE in verständlicher Form zusammenzufassen, um Ärzte zu befähigen, ihre EoE-Patienten bestmöglich zu betreuen.
