Schon Aristoteles und Platon haben sich mit den Phänomenen Erinnern und Vergessen auseinandergesetzt und auch heute noch sind Menschen von diesen fasziniert. Immer wieder hat es in der Geschichte bewusste Akte der symbolischen Löschung gegeben. So brennen beispielsweise am 10. Mai 1933 in ganz Deutschland Bücher. Studentische Nationalsozialisten wollen unzählige Schriften - u. a die von Karl Marx, Walter Benjamin und Sigmund Freud - aus dem kulturellen Gedächtnis tilgen.
