Die Bildung des Phytohormons Jasmonsäure unterliegt einer strengen Kontrolle und ist zeitlich wie Gewebe-abhängig sehr genau reguliert. Hinweise auf einen möglichen Regulationsmechanismus durch reversible Phosphorylierung ergaben sich aus der Röntgenstrukturanalyse der Oxophytodiensäurereduktase 3 (OPR3), die einen limitierenden Schritt der Jasmonsäurebiosynthese katalysiert. OPR3 liegt hier als Dimer vor, welches als inaktive Form der OPR3 interpretiert wird. Tatsächlich konnte gezeigt werden, dass monomere OPR3-Formen eine höhere Aktivität aufweisen. Phosphorylierte Isoformen der OPR3 konnten in vivo nachgewiesen werden und wurden vorwiegend in Geweben detektiert, in denen der Biosyntheseweg der Jasmonsäure aktiv ist. Es liegt daher der Schluss nahe, dass eine OPR3-Phosphorylierung zu deren Aktivierung führt. Als posttranslationale Modifizierungen von OPR3 wurden die Nα-terminale Acetylierung und Phosphorylierungen an den Threoninen 2 und 11 massenspektrometrisch nachgewiesen. Auch wenn die genauen Mechanismen der OPR3-Regulation, sowie die Bedeutung der identifizierten posttranslationalen Modifikationen der OPR3 noch nicht vollständig geklärt sind, konnte gezeigt werden, dass eine Regulation der Jasmonsäure-Biosynthese auf Ebene der OPR3 über das Monomer/Dimer-Gleichgewicht stattfindet.
