Im Unterschied zum Wohnbau ist die Architektur von Bürogebäuden im vergangenen Jahrzehnt nur sehr spärlich in vergleichenden Büchern thematisiert worden und oft sind die Gebäude nur von aussen dargestellt. Diese Lücke schliesst das vorliegende Buch, herausgegeben von der in Lausanne lehrenden Amerikanerin Jeannette Kuo, auf beeindruckende Weise. Anhand der Schnitte, Grundrisse und Fotografien von 20 Fallbeispielen – von Frank Lloyd Wright, Giuseppe Terragni und Le Corbusier bis zu SANAA, Herzog & de Meuron, Toyo Ito und Christian Kerez – werden die sich wandelnden Innenraum-Typologien von Bürogebäuden studiert und danach in diagrammatischer Form analysiert. Neun Essays renommierter Autorinnen und Autoren, ein Comic sowie ein Interview beleuchten unterschiedliche Facetten des Office Building in Vergangenheit und Gegenwart. Zudem führen Studentenarbeiten der EPFL Lausanne die Beschäftigung mit dem Bürogebäude in neue Projekte über. Seinen Titel bezieht das Buch aus der Auseinandersetzung mit dem ebenfalls abgedruckten Essay 'Typical Plan' aus dem Buch 'S, M, L, XL' von Rem Koolhaas.
