"Trace elements" are minerals that exist in minute quantities necessary for the growth and development of cells. Exposure to excessive quantities is toxic, but without them our bodies would atrophy. They are the crystalline structures that support life. Over the past decade, Aranda\Lasch has focused obsessively on these structures as a form of both organization and expression for architecture. Their projects explore the interplay between rule-based systems and human ritual. In scale, this work lies somewhere between furniture and building, so that what is built, drawn, and projected gives human measure to procedural thinking. Published on the occasion of the studio's exhibition "The World Would Burn Without Rain" at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Tucson, this book is a collection of recent explorations into modularity, craft, pattern, rhythm, material, and memory. Trace Elements documents a wide-ranging and yet sharply focused body of work from an office dedicated both to intellectual exploration and the honing of a distinct design sensibility.

Mit dem Klangpavillon 'The Morning Line' setzt Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary am Wiener Schwarzenbergplatz ein zeitgenössisches Zeichen. Der 10 Meter hohe und 20 Meter lange Pavillon aus 18 Tonnen schwarz beschichtetem Aluminium ist ein interdisziplinäres Projekt, das Kunst, Architektur, Musik, Mathematik, Kosmologie und Wissenschaft verbindet. Matthew Ritchie hat nicht nur die architektonischen Eigenschaften des Pavillons gestaltet, sondern auch seine klangliche Identität in der Tradition experimenteller Klangräume, inspiriert von Iannis Xenakis, Le Corbusier und Fritz Bornemann, entwickelt. Hans Ulrich Obrist führt in Gesprächen mit den beteiligten Komponisten in diese akustische Dimension ein. Die fraktale Schönheit der Struktur wird eindrucksvoll von dem amerikanischen Starfotografen Todd Eberle dokumentiert. Ritchie, geboren 1964 und in New York lebend, wurde 2001 vom Time Magazine als einer der 100 'innovators for the new millennium' ausgezeichnet. Seine Arbeiten waren in zahlreichen internationalen Ausstellungen zu sehen, darunter die Whitney Biennale sowie die Biennalen in São Paulo und Sydney. Sie befinden sich in bedeutenden Sammlungen wie dem MOMA und dem Guggenheim Museum.
