Bas Princen (*1975 in Zeeland, the Netherlands) belongs to a generation of photographers who in their very own way make reference to so-called New Topographics. This is a group of what in the meantime consists of ten big-name landscape photographers, including Robert Adams, Lewis Baltz, Stephen Shore, and of course Bernd and Hilla Becher, who had their first big international success in 1975 with an exhibition of the same name at George Eastman House in Rochester. While they distanced themselves from subjectively-tinged photography in an attempt to render stark reality as faithfully as possible, Princen objectifies urban space in a comparable way, but with an ironic twist. This book comprises two essays on the theoretical work of Giorgio Grassi and Aldo Rossi. The need for this (unequal) comparison stems not only from the richness of these works, but from their peculiar fragility. There is in fact something that might be lost if these works were not discussed in the most candid and direct way.

In April 2016, the Kunstmuseum Basel is opening its new building, increasing its exhibition space by approximately two thirds. Designed by the architectural office Christ & Gantenbein, the building is completely in the service of art—solitary in its outward appearance, it is nevertheless closely linked to the Kunstmuseum, both in formal terms as well as by means of an underground connecting tract. This publication introduces the building in all of its facets for the first time. In extensive texts, the director of the Kunstmuseum Basel, Bernhard Mendes Bürgi, and the architect Emanuel Christ describe the concept as well as the content-related and artistic aspects of this new building; Mechtild Widrich looks at it in the general context of museum architecture.
