Translated and selected by scholar M. Shane Bjornlie, The Selected Letters gathers the most interesting evidence from the Veriae for understanding the political culture, legal structure, intellectual and religious worldviews, and social evolution during the twilight of the late-Roman state. Bjornlie’s invaluable introduction discusses Cassiodorus’s work in civil, legal, and financial administration, revealing his interactions with emperors, kings, bishops, military commanders, private citizens, and even criminals. Thus, the Variae remains among the most important sources for the history of this pivotal period and is an indispensable resource for understanding political and diplomatic culture, economic and legal structure, intellectual heritage, urban landscapes, religious worldview, and the evolution of social relations at all levels of society during the twilight of the late-Roman state. This is the first full translation of this masterwork into English.

„Welch gesegnetes Unterfangen und rühmenswerter Eifer, den Menschen mit der (schreibenden) Hand zu predigen und ihnen das Heil schweigend darzureichen!“ Mit diesen Worten preist Cassiodor die Arbeit seiner Mönche in dem von ihm gegründeten Kloster Vivarium bei Squillace in Unteritalien. Diese Arbeit bestand vor allem im Kopieren der Werke der antiken Literatur; Cassiodors spätantiker Klosterbetrieb wurde in der Folgezeit Vorbild für viele Schreibstuben des Mittelalters, und ohne die Mönche des Vivarium wäre die Literatur der Antike größtenteils verlorengegangen. Ziel der vorliegender Arbeit ist es, neben der quellengeschichtlichen Analyse des langen und vielfältigen Traditionszusammenhanges, in welchem Cassiodor steht, auch diejenigen Aspekte an Cassiodors Schaffen und Persönlichkeit aufzuzeigen, die von der bisherigen Forschung eher vernachlässigt worden sind ( u. a. kompositorische Eigenart und stilistischer Rang der Institutiones).

Der Ostgotenkönig Theoderich der Große (451-526) erlangte Ende des 5. Jahrhunderts die Herrschaft über Italien und brachte dem Land eine dreißigjährige Friedenszeit. Es gelang ihm, Römern und Germanen ein friedliches Zusammenleben zu ermöglichen. Er betrieb die Politik einer kunstvollen Balance zwischen dem oströmischen Kaiser einerseits und den Königen der germanischen Stämme andererseits; zu diesen gehörten die Westgoten, die Franken, die Thüringer, die Vandalen und andere. Mit den verschiedenen innen- und außenpolitischen Partnern stand Theoderich in einem lebendigen brieflichen Austausch. Diese Briefe wurden in seinem Auftrag von seinem Sekretär Cassiodor abgefaßt und von diesem später unter dem Titel 'Variae' veröffentlicht. Glücklicherweise sind sie erhalten geblieben und liegen hier erstmals in einer Auswahl in deutscher Sprache vor. Die Briefe stellen ein geschichtlich einmaliges Dokument dar; von keinem anderen Germanenfürsten gibt es Vergleichbares.
