Another piece, "The Order Book" by Jonathan Oldjunk, carries a name that evokes the idea of discarded items, raising curiosity about why someone would adopt such a moniker, especially later in life when one becomes more sensitive about physical ailments. Yet, "old junk" can be repurposed, as Mr. Oldjunk's early adventures were transformed into a literary format that included romantic elements. Notably, the Earl of St. Vincent, when First Lord of the Admiralty, recognized a specific type of old junk—“shakings”—with a special order for its preservation, a detail that features in a humorous anecdote from Basil Hall's "Fragments of Voyages and Travels," showcasing the valuable recollections that would have otherwise been lost without this periodical.

Polski rynek księgarski obfituje w pozycje książkowe poświęcone tematyce morskiej. Najczęściej jednakże są to prace o charakterze stricte militarnym i traktujące głównie o okresie I i II Wojny Światowej. Niezwykle mało miejsca poświęcono natomiast w literaturze polskojęzycznej tzw. erze żagla. Z tym większą przyjemnością chcielibyśmy oddać w państwa ręce klasyczną już na Zachodzie pozycję autorstwa Alfreda Thayera Mahana (1840-1914) pt.: „Wpływ potęgi morskiej na historię 1660-1683”. Autor, oficer U.S. Navy i wykładowca w Naval War College określany jest dzisiaj mianem „Clausewitza wojny morskiej” i „najważniejszym amerykańskim strategiem XIX wieku”. W swoich rozważaniach stworzył on podwaliny na których aż po dzień dzisiejszy opierają się założenia strategiczne największych potęg morskich. Niniejsze dzieło jest pokłosiem cyklu wykładów poświęconych zagadnieniom historii i strategii morskiej, które autor wygłosił pracując jeszcze jako wykładowca w Naval War College. Wykłady Mahana cieszyły się tak ogromną popularnością, aż w końcu ten zdecydował się wydać je drukiem. Wyjątkowość pracy Mahana polega na tym, że autor nie zarzuca nas „deszczem dat i faktów”, choć i tych w książce nie brakuje, lecz skupia się na dogłębnej analizie wydarzeń, postaw i procesów, które ukształtowały stosunek sił na morzach i oceanach. Mahan poddając ocenie zarówno historyczne fakty jak i zgłębiając mentalność ludzi epoki, operuje na wielu płaszczyznach, formuje w kwestii morskiej strategii daleko idące wnioski i nie ogranicza się w swoich rozważaniach jedynie do problematyki czysto militarnej. Niniejsze tłumaczenie oparte jest na pierwszym bostońskim wydaniu „Influence of Sea Power Upon History 1660-1783” z roku 1890, jednakże zarówno ze względu na jego objętość, jak również z przyczyn czysto technicznych zdecydowaliśmy się podzielić ją na dwa tomy, z których pierwszy mają w tej chwili Państwo w ręku.
