Charles Robert Maturin

    Charles Maturin était un ecclésiastique protestant irlandais et un auteur de pièces et de romans gothiques. Ses premières œuvres, publiées sous pseudonyme, furent des échecs critiques et commerciaux mais attirèrent l'attention d'influentes personnalités littéraires. Avec leur soutien, sa pièce Bertram trouva un public plus large et connut le succès, bien que le gain financier lui échappât en raison d'obligations familiales et de critiques défavorables. Ces circonstances le contrecrirent à dépendre exclusivement de l'écriture, passant du théâtre au roman après une série de pièces ratées, l'une de ses œuvres romanesques lui valant plus tard l'admiration d'auteurs tels que Honoré de Balzac et Charles Baudelaire.
