Beyond Cold War is based on the examination of confrontation areas of the Cold War in Europe. Border regions on which the NATO states and those of the Warsaw Pact stood face to face to each other.During the Cold War the observers were always observed, too. The feeling of observing and simultaneously being observed, the assumed harassment through the antagonist, the alertness and awaiting (action and reaction) are the central starting points of this work. For both sides there was the question about the world behind the border, because both were stamped by massive cultural and political differences, laboured by analogous propaganda.

In der DDR wurden planmäßig Neubausiedlungen errichtet, die neben der Schaffung von Wohnraum zugleich eine sozialistische Alternative zu den „bürgerlichen“ Altstädten bieten sollten. Was damals – auch wegen der sauberen Fernwärme und des fließend-heißen Wassers – begehrt war, ist heute oftmals zur problembeladenen Randzone verkommen. Eine davon ist die Silberhöhe in Halle (Saale). Robert Schlotter hat zwischen 2005 und 2007 die Silberhöhe besucht, Straßenzüge abgelichtet und Portraits ihrer Bewohner gefertigt. Das Schwarzweiß seiner Fotos verstärkt die bauliche Trostlosigkeit der Plattenbauten, geradezu konträr dazu stehen die Menschen, die hier wohnen. In ihren Blicken – hier nähert sich Schlotter der Halleserie von Helga Paris – ist der Wille zum Beharren spürbar. Silberhöhe, das ist vielen auch Heimat geworden.
