"The ornamented façade of the Umayyad "desert palace" Mshatta is an icon of Islamic art and key to an understanding of its historical emergence and art historical definition. The façade was once part of a "desert palace" that was built around the mid-8th century AD in the area of present-day Jordan. In the early twentieth century it came to Berlin as a gift of the Ottoman sultan. Today it has its place in the Museum für Islamische Kunst in Berlin and is one of the major monumental exhibits on the Museum Island. The present volume traces the history of Mshatta from the time of its discovery by Western travelers around 1840 to its musealisation in Berlin to its destruction during the war and subsequent reconstruction: beginning with the archaeological significance of Mshatta, this book examines its reception and impact history as an object of modern historiography and museology. A central aspect considered throughout is the intercultural interrelationship between the object's origin and its European reception history. Hence, the history of Mshatta in Berlin is also a case study for art historical and/or museal concepts and constructs that inform the perception of non-European art and culture."--Publisher's description.

In recent years, the emerging field of museum studies has seen rapid expansion in the critical study of museums and scholars started to question the institution and its functions. To contribute differentiated viewpoints to the currently evolving meta-discourse on the museum, this volume aims to investigate how the institution of the museum has been visualized and translated into different kinds of images and how these images have affected our perception of these institutions. In this interdisciplinary collection, scholars from a variety of academic backgrounds, including art history, heritage, museums studies and architectural history, explore a broad range of case studies stretching across the globe. The volume opens up debate about the epistemological and historiographical significance of a variety of different images and representations of the Art Museum, including the transformation or adaptation of the image of the art museum across periods and cultures. In this context, this volume aims to develop a new theoretical framework while proposing new methodological tools and resources for the analysis of museological representations on a global scale.

Die ornamentierte Fassade des umayyadischen Wüstenschlosses Mschatta in Jordanien ist ein ikonisches Werk der islamischen Kunst – ein Schlüsselwerk für das Verständnis ihrer Entstehung und Definition. Die Fassade, die 1903/04 als Geschenk des osmanischen Sultans nach Berlin kam, befindet sich heute im Museum für Islamische Kunst und zählt zu den bedeutendsten Exponaten der Museumsinsel. Die Autorin untersucht in der umfassenden Publikation den Werdegang Mschattas als museales Exponat im 20. Jahrhundert. Ausgehend vom archäologischen Stellenwert wird seine Rezeptions- und Wirkungsgeschichte als Gegenstand moderner Museologie beleuchtet. Besonders die interkulturelle Wechselbeziehung zwischen seiner Herkunft und seinem westlich-musealen Standpunkt steht dabei im Fokus.

1910 fand auf der Münchner Theresienhöhe die größte Ausstellung islamischer Kunst aller Zeiten statt. Rund 3600 Exponate aus internationalen Sammlungen und Museen wurden als «Meisterwerke muhammedanischer Kunst» gezeigt. Viele dieser Werke gelten bis heute als Inkunabeln der islamischen Kunst. Die Ausstellung wurde zur bedeutenden Weichenstellung für die moderne wissenschaftliche, aber auch populäre und künstlerische Rezeption dieser Kunst im Westen. Mit diesem Buch liegt die erste umfassende monografische Studie zur Münchner Ausstellung vor. Sie beschränkt sich jedoch nicht auf die Rekonstruktion des Ereignisses aus zeitgenössischen Text- und Bildquellen, sondern bietet weiter eine fundierte Einordnung in breitere kultur- und vor allem wissenschaftsgeschichtliche Zusammenhänge, die den Stellenwert der neuartigen Präsentations- und Rezeptionsmodi von «München 1910» verdeutlichen. Damit beleuchtet dieses Buch über das Einzelereignis hinaus auch wesentliche Stationen einer interkulturellen Fach-, Wissenschafts- und Kulturgeschichte, die sich heute mehr denn je zu einer kritischen Standortbestimmung herausgefordert sieht.
