Protestbewegungen wie der Arabische Frühling und die Occupy-Demonstrationen haben zu einer Wiederbelebung seiner Wahrnehmung sowohl bei der Bevölkerung als auch bei Institutionen geführt. Der öffentliche Raum ist zu einem umkämpften Gut geworden, das von verschiedenen Interessengruppen wie Demonstranten, Nachbarschaftsinitiativen, Sport- und Musikveranstaltungen sowie Kunstausstellungen beansprucht wird. Aktuelle Debatten drehen sich um die Definition des öffentlichen Raums, dessen Besitzverhältnisse und die Sicherstellung seiner kostenfreien Nutzbarkeit in der Zukunft. Diese Themen werden in einem Katalogbuch behandelt, das im Zusammenhang mit einer Ausstellung der Akademie der Künste Berlin entsteht. Kuratiert von Wilfried Wang, präsentiert das Buch Essays internationaler Experten und Fallstudien zu Architektur, Soziologie, Kunst und Urbanismus. Es werden exemplarische Projekte wie das Tempelhofer Feld in Berlin, der Trafalgar Square in London, der Campo de Cebada in Madrid und der Brooklyn Bridge Park in New York City vorgestellt. Zudem werden künstlerische Interventionen im öffentlichen Raum thematisiert, die den Status quo infrage stellen und neue Perspektiven eröffnen.

Water and land are vital resources for Paraguay, underpinning its rural agricultural economy, which remains the primary source of national income. However, the economy faces challenges, including high unemployment and low individual incomes, with most jobs tied to rural sectors rather than urban business services. In this context, architects Solano Benítez and Javier Corvalán are transforming limitations into assets. They exemplify the idea that necessity drives innovation and creativity is essential for culture. Their distinct architectural approaches are rooted in the cultural context of Paraguay. Benítez's handcrafted brick structures, like the award-winning Abu & Font house, showcase minimalism and elegance, while Corvalán's designs emphasize flexibility and experimental forms, challenging traditional notions of architecture. This publication highlights their contributions to contemporary Paraguayan architecture, showcasing their unique research perspectives. As Paraguay looks towards a sustainable future, Benítez and Corvalán advocate for low-tech solutions in energy, construction, and agriculture, offering profound insights into building a resilient society without repeating past mistakes.
