Real and Imaginary Spaces from Stalinstadt to Pyongyang
Formerly socialist countries have gone through manifold transformations while remnants of socialism remain ubiquitous. The volume explores various spaces of the postsocialist landscape, describing the concreteness and intimacy of some of the places that span across and even beyond of what is left of the "second world" today.
Economists and political scientists wrestle with the challenges faced by Russian officials and public alike in adapting to a market economy and democracy, including the fragility of property rights and elections still rooted in old institutional structures. Contributors examine the reforms of health and welfare, and the hierarchy of privilege and access, and consider how Putin's statist approach to mythmaking compares to that of previous Soviet and post-Soviet regimes. Historians and anthropologists explore the issue of nostalgia, gender, punishment, belief, and how history itself is being created and perceived today. The volume concludes with a journey through the ruined landscape of real socialism.
Neben der Zeitschrift Wiener Slawistischer Almanach erscheinen seit 1980 auch 2-3 Mal jährlich Sonderbände (seither 94 Ausgaben) mit literaturwissenschaftlichem oder linguistischem Schwerpunkt. Die literarische Reihe umfasst Monographien oder Tagungsbeiträge aus allen Bereichen der aktuellen slavischen Literaturwissenschaft und weit darüber hinaus (Medientheorie, Kulturwissenschaft, Literaturkritik).
