Der Arzt und Botaniker Albrecht Wilhelm Roth (1757 - 1834) hatte sich Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts zur Aufgabe gemacht eine Verzeichnis der wild lebenden Pflanzen in Deutschland zu erstellen. Nach seiner Promotion in Erlangen ließ sich Roth 1879 in Vegesack an der Weser nieder, wirkte als Landphysicus des Herzogtums Bremen und widmete sich gleichzeitig seinen botanischen Interessen. So gründete er einen Park am Weserufer und ließ sich von Reisenden aus aller Welt Gewächse mitbringen, die er einpflanzte und untersuchte. Seine Forschungen publizierte er in zahlreichen Schriften, allerdings zumeist in lateinischer Sprache. Vorliegendes Buch zählt zu seinen Hauptwerken.
