Pracuje dokonalým veršem, který téměř nezná elizi, tak charakteristickou pro latinské básníky, a to právě prozrazuje cizince, který mistrně zvládl latinské veršování. Obsah jeho veršů vyžaduje namnoze složitých komebntářů, chceme-li proniknout do aktuálních dobových narážek, ale nepotřebuje vysvětlení, chceme-li se nechat unášet básnickou formou a obrazy. Zvláštním půvabem prosluly i jeho úvody k některým básním. Císaři, konsulové, uzurpátoři, nejvyšší zásluhy, nejpodlejší intriky, napětí doby a strach z barbarů oděných v kůže vystupují v celé Claudianově poezii vedle prostých lidských vztahů, vyjádřených smělými mytologickými obrazy zvláště ve svatebních písních, a vedle obrazů vzatých z běžného života anebo i ze staleté básnické tradice. Rozporuplná doba zplodila i básnické dílo Claudianovo, plné rozporů.
