What is the role of the “popular” in a time of rising right-wing populism? How to resist or subvert these increasingly aggressive framings of „the people“? How to engage with all these tangled histories and uncertain futures? Such are the questions at the heart of the 51st edition of steirischer herbst, a major interdisciplinary festival of contemporary art in Europe, held every autumn in Graz and in Styria, Austria. The title of the accompanying reader, Volksfronten | Popular Fronts, refers to the historical front populaire —the broad coalition of communists and liberals that unsuccessfully tried to challenge fascism in the 1930s. Nine essays as well as artists’ texts and full color images examine the relevance of that historical context and illuminate the role of critical thinking and artistic practice. This oversized monograph documents the Russian-born, Moscow- and Cologne-based artist George Pusenkoff’s extensive body of work around the “Mona Lisa.” He created a portable, digitized reprise of the famous work and photographed it throughout Russia, on the International Space Station and in a giant installation at the 2005 Venice Biennale.

Der Künstler und Filmemacher Josef Dabernig (geb. 1956, Kötschach-Mauthen, Österreich) arbeitet quer durch alle Genres und ist mit seinen Werken nicht nur in Kunstinstitutionen, sondern auch auf internationalen Filmfestivals vertreten. Seine frühe Arbeit ist von formaler Ordnung und Strenge geprägt. Bis Mitte der 1990er-Jahre sind primär Listen, konzeptuelle Textarbeiten oder mathematisch strukturierte Objekte entstanden. In den letzten Jahrzehnten hat Dabernig sein Repertoire durch Film und Fotografie wesentlich um erzählerische Komponenten erweitert. Für das mumok entwickelte er einen pointierten Ausstellungsparcours mit Werken aus allen Schaffensphasen, der Film, Foto, Text, dreidimensionale Objekte und Architektur miteinbezieht. Die Publikation erscheint zusammen mit dem Werkkatalog „Josef Dabernig“ anlässlich der Ausstellung „Josef Dabernig. Rock the Void“ im mumok, Wien, 2014.
