Culture is a constant reference in debates surrounding Islam in Europe. Yet the notion of culture is commonly restricted to conceptual frames of multiculturalism where it relates to group identities, collective ways of life and recognition. This volume extends such analysis of culture by approaching it as semiotic practice which conjoins the making of subjects with the configuration of the social. Examining fields such as memory, literature, film, and Islamic art, the studies in this volume explore culture as another element in the assemblage of rationalities governing European Islam. From this perspective, the transformations of European identities can be understood as a matter of cultural practice and politics, which extend the analytical frames of political philosophy, historical legacies, normative orders and social dynamics.
Racism has become difficult to name in Europe. Racial semantics are shifting, race is coded in multiple ways and the defense of naturalized privilege is today regularly argued so as to preempt accusations of racism. The possibility to address racism as a particular kind of power formation has become complicated. This volume examines how »race« relates to the operations of social power in particular contexts and what the critical purchase and effectiveness of analytical concepts of racism can be. A partir de los años sesenta y más aceleradamente después de los ochenta, la población musulmana en Europa ha ido creciendo –sobre todo por la emigración de carácter laboral, pero también política e incluso social, a través de los sistemas de reagrupación familiar– de forma consistente, hasta el punto de constituir hoy en día en todos los países occidentales una minoría cada vez más visible y consciente de sus derechos colectivos, comenzando por el de que la sociedad y los poderes públicos respeten su identidad cultural, una reivindicación que ha encontrado uno de sus vehículos más efectivos en las organizaciones, surgidas en los países de origen de los emigrantes y trasplantadas a Occidente. Se trata de una identidad que a veces entra en conflicto con los valores dominantes en el país huésped, sea por la rigidez de determinadas organizaciones de la comunidad musulmana, sea por la incomprensión, a menudo trocada en hostilidad, de la comunidad nativa. Esta obra, fruto de las aportaciones de estudiosos de los diferentes países europeos y publicada en España en coedición con Casa Árabe, es fundamental en muchos aspectos. Su objetivo es analizar la presencia de los movimientos islámicos –mejor que islamistas, porque no se plantean la toma del poder político, ni desde luego la imposible reislamización de las sociedades de acogida– en el seno de las sociedades europeas, partiendo tanto de su proyecto originario como de su articulación con las estructuras legales de las sociedades huéspedes.
