Autodidacte et de caractère ombrageux, il se lia toutefois à ses contemporains romantiques, mais il préférait à tout la solitude de l'atelier ou les longues randonnées au bord de la mer, dans l'île de Rügen notamment, ou encore dans le massif montagneux du Harz. Longtemps tenues dans un demi-oubli, ses peintures apparaissent aujourd'hui comme des archétypes du romantisme.
