Das „hillige Köln“, im Mittelalter auch Rom des Nordens genannt, war mit seinem reichen Reliquienschatz sowohl Ziel und Ausgangspunkt vieler innerstädtischer Wallfahrten als auch Durchgangsstation zahlreicher Pilger auf dem Weg nach Aachen, Rom oder Santiago. Das Buch lädt die Teilnehmer des Weltjugendtages 2005 ein, diesen Spuren der Pilger in Köln und Umgebung zu folgen. Die erste Tour führt quer durch Köln auf innerstädtischen Prozessionswegen, die selbst für Kölner neu sind. Der zweite Weg führt über das Marienfeld, wo die Abschlussmesse des XX. Weltjugendtages stattfindet, nach Kerpen, dem Geburtsort des Gesellenvaters Adolf Kolping. Der Rückweg von Kerpen nach Köln folgt dem Lebensweg Kolpings bis zu seiner Grabstätte in Minoriten.
