Beginning in the late 70s, Martin Kippenberger conceived his work as a point of intersection between artistic contexts and circulating ideas. With his characteristic blend of refinement and extreme crudity, he left very few of the problems and methods of twentieth-century art untouched. Via a postmodernist disposition, one combining humor, direct reference, communicativeness and body politics, Kippenberger seized upon the central artistic questions of the late twentieth century like virtually no other artist of his generation, and translated them into complex structures of communications. This is a beautiful and excitingly designed monograph containing reproductions of paintings, works on paper, sculpture, photographs and installation work, as well as a very strong reading of Kippenberger's work by Manfred Hermes. All of the work reproduced here is in the collection of Friedrich Christian Flick, one of the best in-depth assemblages of contemporary art in the world.

American author Kathy Acker was one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. Working through an experimental and avant-garde tradition, she wrote numerous novels, essays, poems, and novellas from the early 1970s to the late 1990s. As a postmodernist, plagiarist, and post-punk feminist, she continues to inspire generations of writers, philosophers, and artists. The book GET RID OF MEANING, edited by Anja Casser and Matias Viegener, is the first comprehensive publication on Acker?s work from an artistic and literary perspective. Rainer Werner Fassbinder's fourteen-part Berlin Alexanderplatz, broadcast on German television in 1980, is a pivotal work in the artist's oeuvre. The 1929 novel by Alfred Döblin, a subproletarian apocalypse set in the Weimar Republic, provided Fassbinder with material to historicize the avant-garde of the 1920s and redetermine the relationship between utopianism and popular address. While Döblin created his protagonist to be a hysteric, Fassbinder wanted to hystericize the viewer. In this work, along with others from the same period, Fassbinder established a Jewish-German mirror rotating on the axis of the Holocaust. In Hystericizing Germany, Manfred Hermes provides an excursive analysis of the potential of narration within the paradoxes of cinematic representation, with Fassbinder's miniseries forming both beginning and end point.

Die Arbeiten von Henning Bohl (geb. 1975, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin, Studium an der Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main bei Thomas Bayrle und Michael Krebber) verweisen aufeinander, auf das eigene Tun sowie auf andere Kunst(-Richtungen). Damit geht es Bohl um ein Erzählen als auch darum, wie etwas erzählt wird. Seine in diesem Buch gezeigten neuen Installationen sind auf das Wesentliche reduziert. Großformatige Leinwände etwa, auf die aus Papier ausgeschnittene Formen collagiert sind, hängen auf Elementen aus Rigips, die wiederum auf Holzböcken gestapelt ein Hybrid aus Skulptur und Architektur bilden. In dieser eigenwilligen Inszenierung findet eine Relativierung des Status der Arbeiten von Bohl statt. So werden die Bilder zu Requisiten, während ihren Trägern ein eigenständiger plastischer und konzeptueller Wert zukommt. Mit einem Beitrag von Manfred Hermes, freier Autor, zahlreiche Veröffentlichungen zu Kunst und Film in Katalogen, Zeitungen und Zeitschriften.

Das Buch ist wesentlicher Teil der Ausstellung. In einem großen, modellhaften Katamaran agiert die Künstlerin gemeinsam mit Kollegen und Freunden nach einem nicht im Detail festgelegten Szenario über drei Tage unter Ausschluss der Öffentlichkeit. Diese „Besuche“ hält sie fotografisch fest und positioniert sie anschließend im Buch als Bildergeschichten. Der Katamaran als Relikt der Performance wird Teil der Ausstellung.
