Der Funktionalismus ist mehr oder weniger versteckt noch immer das grundlegende Paradigma in der sozialwissenschaftlichen Theoriebildung. Haben neuere Ansätze, wie etwa die Systemtheorie, kritische Einwände entkräften können? Das Buch geht dieser Frage nach. 

Gegenstand dieser empirischen Studie an drei Universitäten sind Zeitverhalten, -verwendung und -wohlstand von 875 Studierenden und 154 Lehrenden unter dem Einfluss der Fachkulturen. Die Ergebnisse legen erhebliche Konsequenzen für die Studienreform nahe.
