This handbook provides the first comprehensive overview of the largely unknown rock art of East Mexico and Central America. It features nine regional studies and an annotated bibliography, illustrated with 100 drawings, photographs, and maps. The publication offers a detailed examination of the rock paintings in these regions, with contributions from authors who have led systematic documentation efforts. They address the latest scientific questions and identify institutions, foundations, and media that facilitate entry into this research field. While primarily aimed at Spanish-speaking readers, the bibliographic sections and striking illustrations also make the rock art accessible to non-Spanish speakers. This work presents both a detailed view and a general understanding of the rock art in Eastern Mexico and Central America, showcasing the significance of these cultural artifacts. The contributions highlight current research issues and provide a valuable resource for anyone interested in exploring the previously underrepresented rock art of the region.

Die Arbeit fokussiert sich auf ethnographische Vergleiche in der Region Gran Chiriquí, die in vier geografisch-archäologische Zonen unterteilt ist: Finca Sonador, Mikroregion Río Convento, Valle de El General und die Provinz Chiriquí. Die Gravuren wurden dokumentiert, klassifiziert und mit anderen ikonographischen Entwürfen verglichen, was zur Formulierung von 15 Thesen als „informierte Vermutungen“ führte. Diese Thesen postulieren, dass die komplexen Punkt- und Linienverbindungen auf verschiedenen Steinen unterschiedliche Perspektiven darstellen und zwischen 300 v. Chr. und 1.550 n. Chr. durch eine unbekannte Bevölkerung in mehreren Techniken als Gruppenarbeiten entstanden sind. Die Gravuren konzentrieren sich an Gewässern, Verkehrswegen und Gräberfeldern und dienten wahrscheinlich als mythische Landmarken im geografischen und historischen Raum. Der Motivschatz weist keine Verbindung zur präkolumbischen oder modernen Sachkultur auf, war vermutlich multimedial und multidirektional lesbar und zeigt lokale Variationen.
