Kant's Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science is one of the most difficult but also most important of Kant's works. Published in 1786 between the first (1781) and second (1787) editions of the Critique of Pure Reason, the Metaphysical Foundations occupies a central place in the development of Kant's philosophy, but has so far attracted relatively little attention compared with other works of Kant's critical period. Michael Friedman's book develops a new and complete reading of this work and reconstructs Kant's main argument clearly and in great detail, explaining its relationship to both Newton's Principia and eighteenth-century scientific thinkers such as Euler and Lambert. By situating Kant's text relative to his pre-critical writings on metaphysics and natural philosophy and, in particular, to the changes Kant made in the second edition of the Critique, Friedman articulates a radically new perspective on the meaning and development of the critical philosophy as a whole.

Kant aimed to establish a philosophy that aligned with the scientific advancements of his time, particularly Euclidean geometry and Newtonian physics. In this new work, Michael Friedman emphasizes the significance of Kant's quest for a metaphysics that underpins the sciences, tracing its influence from his early thesis in 1747 through the Critique of Pure Reason to his final unpublished writings in the Opus postumum. Unlike previous commentators who downplayed these efforts due to the obsolescence of the sciences, Friedman asserts that Kant's philosophy is profoundly informed by his insights into the foundations of the exact sciences, marking a key strength of his work. In the first part, Friedman explores Kant's interactions with geometry, arithmetic, algebra, mechanics, and gravitation. The second part focuses on the Opus postumum, illustrating how Kant's engagement with emerging concepts in heat physics and chemistry motivated his intended transition from the Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science to Physics. This book is a significant scholarly contribution, offering a powerful argument that enhances our understanding of Kant's philosophy of science.

This work explores the lasting impact of logical positivism, examining its philosophical roots and relevance in contemporary thought. It delves into how this movement has shaped modern philosophy, science, and the relationship between language and meaning. By analyzing key figures and concepts, the book offers fresh insights into the implications of logical positivism for understanding knowledge and reality today.
Although the book gives a general overview of the philosophical issues of the period, the author pays special attention to the relationships among three key twentieth-century philosophers: Rudolf Carnap, Ernst Cassirer, and Martin Heidegger."--BOOK JACKET.
