Real property in Germany

In 1975, the first edition's editors initiated this book as a practical guide to German real property law for foreign investors. They identified significant differences between German and Anglo-American legal systems that complicated understanding of legal and tax aspects for their clients. At the time, no other English publication addressed these issues comprehensively. The internationalisation of the German real property market peaked from 2005 to 2007, followed by an investment boom starting in 2011 that continues to attract global interest. This surge has increased the demand for an updated English introduction to the German legal and tax systems, leading to the creation of a new edition. The Eighth Edition is authored by practitioners from international law firms, bringing extensive experience in advising on real property transactions in Germany and abroad. The book retains its established structure, with a new Chapter 24 focusing on the taxation of real property, particularly on share deals versus asset deals in light of proposed changes to tax laws. The Eighth Edition incorporates statutory changes up to the end of 2018. Special thanks are given to Jane Martens for her translation work and to Christian Kleindopff for the index and abbreviations.
