Bergsenkungen als Folge des Steinkohlenabbaus sind im Ruhrgebiet spätestens seit dem Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts bekannt: Der Tiefbau hatte die Emscherzone erreicht und zur Feststellung der Schäden begannen Eisenbahngesellschaften mit Höhenmessungen. Heute nehmen Bergsenkungsgebiete einen Großteil des zentralen Ruhrgebiets ein. Ihre Entstehung ist auf die flächenhafte Erschließung der unterirdischen Lagerstätte im Langfrontbau zurückzuführen. Nach Gewinnung der Steinkohle verbleibt ein Volumendefizit, das sich oberhalb des Abbaubereichs als weiter Senkungstrog bis zur Erdoberfläche durchpaust und ein irreversibel verändertes Relief hinterlässt. Nur selten sind Bergsenkungsgebiete im Ruhrgebiet jedoch so eindeutig zu erkennen wie nach der Bildung eines Bergsenkungssees. Die flächendeckende und systematische Identifizierung von Bergsenkungsgebieten war daher das Ziel einer Forschungsarbeit, deren Ergebnisse in dem vorliegenden Band präsentiert werden. Erstmalig liegen nunmehr für annähernd das gesamte Ruhrgebiet großmaßstäbige Daten zur bergbaubedingten Veränderung der Geländehöhen seit 1892 vor, die Rückschlüsse auf die Lage von Bergsenkungsgebieten und das Ausmaß der Senkungen zulassen.
