After leaving Oxford without a degree, he struggled financially following his father's death and faced rumors of converting to Catholicism. His early career involved writing for Philip Henslowe, marked by poverty and constant pleas for advances. After Henslowe's death, he collaborated with John Fletcher for the King's Men, yet continued to face economic hardships. Massinger's life ended abruptly in 1640, leading to his burial as a "stranger" in Southwark.
