The narrative follows Franz Felder, a boy from Berlin who, like many of his peers, attends elementary school from age six until his confirmation at fourteen. Throughout these years, he acquires only basic skills in writing, arithmetic, and reading, struggling with the mechanics of writing and only managing simple calculations for his personal finances. His limited exposure to literature leaves him questioning the purpose of books, seeing them merely as time fillers. The story reflects on themes of education, personal struggle, and the value of knowledge.
