In 1945 the US Congress recommended awarding the Medal of Honor to 432 American servicemen for acts of gallantry above and beyond the call of duty during World War II. More than one million African Americas served-- but not a single black soldier received a Medal of Honor. In 1993 a US Army-commissioned study that seven men had been denied the Army's highest award due to racial discrimination. Child tells the stories of these seven African American soldiers, who in 1997 were finally awarded Medals of Honor for their service, based on the work of a research team at Shaw University in North Carolina. - adapted from jacket
