En savoir plus sur le livre
Cookie Mueller (1949–1989) was a vibrant figure—a cult icon, writer, go-go dancer, mother, and queer icon. Growing up in 1950s suburban Maryland, she gained fame as an actress in John Waters' films, later becoming an art critic and columnist, known for her humorous storytelling and influence in New York’s downtown art scene. This oral history captures Cookie’s life through over 80 interviews with those who knew her, including notable figures like John Waters, Mink Stole, and Richard Hell. The narrative spans from the late 1960s artist communes in Baltimore to 1970s Provincetown and New York, and 1980s Berlin and Positano. In addition to the text, the work features original artwork, unpublished photographs, and archival materials, showcasing contributions from artists such as Philip-Lorca diCorcia and Robert Mapplethorpe. Since her passing from AIDS in 1989, Cookie has become an underground icon, with her original writings reprinted by various publishers. This exploration serves as a meditation on memory and storytelling, celebrating her lasting impact on art and culture.
