Continuous improvement of turkey production and health: never-ending story

AuszugOn behalf of the World Poultry Science Association - Federation of European Branches, the Institute of Poultry Diseases, Free University Berlin, held and organized the 7th “Hafez” International Symposium on Continuous Improvement of Turkey Production and Health: Never-ending Story (Meeting of the Working group 10 - Turkey). The symposium was held to stimulate the exchange of current information and ideas related to turkey production and to help focusing attention on specific problems and encouraging new approaches to solve them. On behalf of the World Turkey Production and Veterinary Family I´m honoured to dedicate this international symposium to Prof. Dr. Gerhard Monreal for his outstanding contribution to the pathogenesis, diagnosis and control of poultry diseases At the symposium 39 oral presentations were held. The first 4 papers were devoted to topics related to the transparency and globalization of turkey production as well as animal welfare. Two sections with 14 presentations dealt with several aspects related to hatchery monitoring and optimization, light, stocking density and health monitoring improving the rearing management toward reduction of feather pecking and pododermatitis. Three presentations covered the aspect of cleaning and disinfection, vaccination and further possibilities to reduce the misuse of antibiotics. Further 11 presentations were addressed to genetic selection, gut health, bacterial infections and food safety. In addition, 3 papers covered toxicity and Histomonosis. The last four presentations dealt with viral infections in turkeys with special attention to avian influenza H9N2. 137 scientists and experts from 21 countries (Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Iran, Israel, Italy, Morocco, Nigeria, Poland, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom and United States of America) attended the symposium. It is my sincere pleasure to acknowledge all the speakers for their co-operation and willingness to share their expertise with the global turkey family. I also wish to use this opportunity to express my appreciation for our sponsors. I am most grateful for their generosity, which was essential to conduct a meeting with such broad participation. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to all individuals who worked in the planning and co-ordination of that event, especially the staff of the Institute of Poultry Diseases at the Free University Berlin. I hope that the information presented in this proceeding will be a valuable reference for everybody involved in the turkey production chain.
