The sixth annual ISHPES seminar took place in Kanazawa, Japan, from July 9 to 12, 2002, focusing on 'Local Identity and Sport.' With 150 participants from 20 countries, the event featured research presentations, keynote speeches, and lively debates. Keynote addresses were delivered by Professors Guttmann and Okubo on the first day. Over the next two days, 59 oral presentations were organized in three rooms, covering themes such as 'The Development and Globalization of Sport,' 'Traditional and Local Sports,' and 'Gender and Physical Education Policy.' Additionally, 26 poster presentations were showcased. The scenic setting fostered meaningful exchanges among attendees. The final day included a roundtable workshop centered on 'Local Identity and Sport,' highlighting the significant role of sport in shaping local identity, community development, and nationalism. This theme proved essential for understanding the relationship between sport and daily life, warranting further exploration in the future. The book comprises 83 papers from various contributors, including Ikuo Abe, Heiko Bittmann, Richard Cox, and many others, reflecting a diverse range of perspectives on the intersection of local identity and sport.
