Seit der Mensch denkt (d. h. seit er theoretisiert), besteht ein Bruch zwischen Theorie und Praxis. In fast allen Disziplinen spielt der Gegensatz zwischen der grauen Theorie und dem grünen oder goldenen Leben (der Praxis) eine wesentliche Rolle. Wie sieht dieser Bruch genau aus, und wie kann man ihn überbrücken? Diese Fragen wurden von international ausgewiesenen Experten aus diversen Disziplinen (Erziehungswissenschaft, Psychologie, Sprachwissenschaften, Theologie, Philosophie, Kommunikationswissenschaft und Sozialanthropologie) diskutiert und die Ergebnisse sind im vorliegenden Band zusammengetragen. Trotz der unterschiedlichen Disziplinen und der individuellen Vorgangsweisen zeigt sich immer wieder, dass der Abstand zwischen Theorie und Praxis zwar verringert, aber nie aufgelöst werden kann, dass Brücken zwar geschlagen werden, letztlich aber der Einzelne (sei er Praktiker oder Theoretiker) den Weg von der einen zur anderen Seite selber gehen muss. Jede Disziplin hat dazu ihre eigenen Vorgangsweisen, ja in der gleichen Disziplin können diese sehr unterschiedlich sein. Aber niemals ist der Bruch ein vollständiger, immer gibt es Brücken und Wege - man muss sie nur (er-)finden.

Dieser Sammelband ist das Ergebnis einer multidisziplinären Tagung, die Wissenschaftler aus den Universitäten Fribourg (Schweiz) und Salzburg zusammengebracht hat. Die verschiedenen Beiträge befassen sich mit totalen Sozialphänomenen, die mit Illusion, Mystifikation, Vortäuschung, Selbsttäuschung, Manipulation, Vertuschung, Verdrehung Unterwanderung, Lüge und Betrug zu tun haben. Es handelt sich also um unbehagliche Praktiken, die allerdings in jedem gesellschaftlichen Feld häufig vorkommen und daher das soziale Leben von Individuen, Gemeinschaften und Gruppen prägen. Die analysierten Fälle sollen die gesellschaftliche Funktionslogik sowie auch die Normalität solcher Tatbestände aufzeigen.

The coherence of the various contributions in this book are determined by a distinct vision of political anthropology based on the interpretative approach of Max Weber and his successors, in particular Alfred Schutz. Accordingly, a disenchanted political anthropology does not conform to fashionable trends, but rather is shaped by the classics of social sciences, anthropology, and sociology foremost. The disquieting allure of disenchanted anthropology lies precisely in its nonconformist and deeply skeptical regard eloigne through which, by means of discomfiting empirical material and unconventional theoretic reasonings, it challenges some of Western society's certainties about both itself and societies classified as 'other.' However, the ultimate goal of the book is precisely this unveiling of our faded idols deeply rooted in our common sense and in the current anthropological conformism. Does East Go West? examines the study of post-socialism from an anthropological perspective. These social systems have posed a challenge to anthropological theory that has been the subject of lively exchanges for over 20 years now. Can post-socialism as a concept adequately apply to the current situation in Eastern Europe? One of the answers proposed here is that specific elements derived from postcolonial studies may prove very useful in analyzing Eastern Europe's post-socialist countries. This volume deals with different aspects of informal structures and practices in Eastern Europe. Its objectives are twofold. It aims at discovering whether or to what extent informal structures and practices in Eastern Europe have meanings, functions, forms and effects different from those that can be observed in the politics and societies of Western Europe. The authors of this volume – most of them are from the region – have been invited to discuss the scientific relevance of the distinction informal / formal in their respective field of research or discipline. This points to the second objective of this volume which is to encourage a more fruitful interaction between disciplines that often disregard each other and which, despite inevitable and essential epistemological differences, have significant shared interests such as the comparative analysis of political phenomena in terms of elementary forms of social organization. The relation between informality and formality in a more methodologically pluralist and ultimately holistic way can be analysed via regards croisés between the disciplines anthropology, political science and sociology. This allows the extension of this comparative and multidisciplinary approach to other themes and phenomena of mutual interests.
