Possessed by the Dark Destiny, she had stolen Garion's infant son for a ritual that would destroy all that men valued. Somehow, as the Seeress of Kell had warned, they had to be at the Place Which Is No More for the ritual at the same time as Zandramas, or face disaster. But where that might be they still had no clue.

La course bat son plein ; tout l’univers retient son souffle. Zandramas est en fuite avec un moyen sûr d’imposer la domination des forces obscures ; encore faut-il échapper à ses poursuivants, les Gardiens du Ponant, régulièrement contrariés par des obstacles imprévus : cette fois, c’est l’empereur de Mallorée qui les fait prisonniers. Or, tout va mal en Mallorée. Urvon, le dernier disciple de Torak, est devenu fou : le Nouveau Dieu des Angaraks, c’est lui, il en est sûr. D’autres misent sur Nahaz, le Démon Majeur, qui, à la tête de ses sombres hordes, met le pays à feu et à sang ; des crânes humains badigeonnés de sang remplacent l’effigie de Torak au fronton des temples. Le temps presse. L’Enfant de Lumière et ses amis doivent coûte que coûte accomplir la Prophétie. Sinon, toutes sortes de gens vont chercher le Sardion et ce qui triomphera, ce n’est même pas le mal, mais le chaos…

Voici venus les temps où les peuples respirent. Torak est mort, le dieu-dragon, l’Enfant des Ténèbres, et la menace cosmique paraît conjurée. Tout est calme en tout lieu dans les royaumes du Ponant. Pourtant la Prophétie des Ténèbres est bien gravée dans les mémoires : une parole, ça ne peut pas mourir. Et le vieux Gorim, dans sa grotte, entend gémir et gronder la terre : une pierre maléfique s’est réveillée à l’autre bout du monde. Le culte de l’Ours aurait-il encore, contre toute attente, des adeptes secrets ? Ça et là, on complote, on assassine, on repère les enfants marqués par le destin. Déjà la guerre s’allume dans les États du Sud. Puis, une nuit, la Voix parle à Garion. Qu’est-ce que le Sardion, la pierre tombée du ciel dont le nom fait frémir les Ulgos ? Où est “l’Endroit qui n’est plus” ? Faut-il combattre encore les Ténèbres vaincues ? Bien, les Gardiens du Ponant vont reprendre du service…

Soudain jaillirent du sol des formes ténébreuses: silhouettes immenses, robes noires, masques d'acier étincelant. Elles avaient surgi à l'endroit le plus inattendu, entre les rangs mêmes de l'armée. Un jeune chevalier mimbraïque en avisa une à ses côtés et sabra. A l'instant où sa lame traversait l'ombre, il fut frappé par la foudre. Des tourbillons de fumée s'élevèrent des fentes de son ventail et il grilla dans son armure. Ce'Nedra, la Fiancée de Lumière, crispa la main sur son amulette et ferma les yeux : "Aide-nous, Belgarath ! Nous allons être écrasés ! " A quoi servait de l'appeler? Sans doute avait-il atteint la Cité de la Nuit, où Torak s'éveillait au milieu des ruines. L'immense geste s'achevait dans le fracas des armes, et l'enfant de la prophétie n'est pas prêt. La guerre de sept mille ans allait finir par la victoire du Dieu-Dragon des Angaraks !

La saison de la blessure était venue. La saison où jadis l'Orbe avit brûlé Torak. Le moment propice aux sacrifices humains. Car l'orbe était là, dans les mains du voleur. Il fallait récupérer la pierre où palpitait la vie. Le sort des royaumes du Ponant en dépendait...

Horreur! Le dieu pervers, Torak, va s'éveiller ! Les temps sont venus, l'univers vacille et Belgarath se hâte : il n'est que temps de retrouver l'Orbe d'Aldur, le joyau du destin, qui peut sauver les hommes de la colère des dieux. De la brumeuse Arendie à la putride Nyissie, patrie des Hommes-Serpents, Belgarath entraîne Garion sur une route semée d'embûches. Garion, le petit paysan qui n'a jamais cru aux sorts, ne sent pas la haine qui le menace, ne comprend pas ces femmes qui se pressent autour de lui : une pour l'instruire, une pour le séduire, une pour le réconcilier avec les pouvoirs dont il ne veut pas... Est-ce lui, l'Enfant de Lumière, le descendant des rois de Riva, l'enfant marqué par les présages, de toute éternité, pour affronter Torak ?

Et les Dieux créèrent l'homme, et chaque dieu choisit son peuple. Ah! Que le monde était jeune, que les mystères étaient limpides! Mais Torak, le dieu jaloux, vola l'Orbe d'Aldur, le joyau vivant façonné par l'aîné des dieux, et ce fut la guerre. Le félon fut châtié ; à Cthol Mishrak, la Cité de la Nuit, il dort toujours, d'un long sommeil hanté par la souffrance. Le fleuve des siècles a passé sur les royaumes du Ponant. Les livres des présages ne parlent plus qu'aux initiés, mais ils sont formels : Torak va s'éveiller. Et justement l'Orbe disparaît pour la seconde fois. Que le maudit la trouve à son réveil et il établira son empire sur toutes choses. Belgarath le sorcier parviendra-t-il à conjurer le sort? Dans cette partie d'échecs cosmique, il a réussi à préserver une pièce maîtresse : le dernier descendant des Gardiens de l'Orbe, désigné par les présages, mais qui n'est encore qu'un petit garçon jeté sur les routes par une venteuse nuit d'automne. Un simple pion, et si vulnérable...
