Suite du Monde des A, Les Joueurs du A voit Gosseyn, héros perpétuellement largué mais conscient cette fois de ses pouvoirs (téléportation et autres choses mentales), se trouver pris au cœur d'un complot intersidéral dont il est à la fois pion et enjeu. Il intègre ainsi au début le corps d'Ashargin, prince d'une lointaine planète, sans savoir pourquoi ni comment en sortir…Fidèle à lui-même, Van Vogt brinquebale son héros aux quatre coins de l'univers, lui faisant prendre conscience de son rôle cosmique tout en actualisant son extraordinaire potentiel psychique. C'est que, démiurge pas chien, il fait des Joueurs du A un passionnant prétexte aux développements de la sémantique générale, tout en faisant s'affronter dictateurs galactiques, armadas spatiales et ectoplasmes mystérieux. Pour le plaisir d'une science-fiction très originale, loin des bleeps faciles des rayons lasers galvaudés.

Clane, un mutant, revient de son exil dans une tentative d'empêcher l'Empire post-atomique de Linn de se désintégrer. Dans un monde où les survivants luttent pour maintenir l'ordre et la stabilité, Clane se retrouve au cœur d'une lutte de pouvoir complexe. En route, Cargill perd le contrôle de sa voiture et provoque la mort de sa passagère. II fuit et rejoint son unité. Un an plus tard, il reçoit une invitation signée Marie Chanette. Intrigué, il s'y rend et reconnaît sa victime. Qui plus est, elle lui montre des photos extrêmement nettes de l'accident où l'on voit Cargill s'extirper de la voiture, abandonnant le corps brisé et tordu de la malheureuse. Bien au-delà du système solaire, un vaisseau cosmique, parti de la Terre, se livre depuis des années à une randonnée d'exploration interplanétaire. Il rencontre un être fabuleux qui cherche obstinément la source d'énergie qui lui rendra ses terribles pouvoirs.

Un des derniers romans (1977) de celui qui fut une gloire de l'âge d'or de la science-fiction. Il n'a pas tellement changé sa recette toujours accumulatrice et ludique - ici l'anarchie est la norme - et ce récit plutôt faible ne s'adresse qu'à ses fanatiques.

Ce roman fait suite à L'empire de l'atome où nous avons vu le seigneur Clane Linn, le mutant génial, vaincre à lui seul les hordes du chef barbare Czinczar. Mais un autre péril plus mortel encore menace l'empire de Linn et le système solaire : les Riss, une race extra­terrestre venue du fond de l'espace, ont décidé l'asservissement de la Terre et engagé une guerre sans pitié. Le seigneur Clane peut compter cette fois sur l'aide de Czinczar, mais dans sa propre famille tous ses parents complotent sa perte, risquant ainsi de condamner l'humanité entière. Qui triomphera du mutant, aidé par l'antique savoir des dieux de l'Atome, ou des Riss aux armes inimaginables ?

Bien que Mittend soit à trente années-lumière, c'était la planète habitable la plus proche de la Terre. Steven Masters, un jeune héritier en quête d'excitation, s'est donc engagé dans la première expédition habitée. Lorsqu'il se retrouva soudainement sur Terre dans le corps d'un autre homme, cela dépassa ses attentes. Ce qui suivit fut un véritable kaléidoscope d'événements l'impliquant dans des personnalités multiples, dans d'autres expéditions vers Mittend, et dans les affaires d'une entité appelée Mère, pour qui Mittend n'était qu'un moyen d'atteindre un but, et Steven Masters le prochain pas dans un programme galactique. C'est un roman captivant qui explore des thèmes de l'identité, de la manipulation et des enjeux galactiques, tout en offrant la maîtrise narrative unique d'A. E. Van Vogt, avec ses intrigues déroutantes et ses rebondissements inattendus.

Une longue nouvelle ou un court roman de 1959 qui ne décevra pas les amateurs de cet auteur désormais classique.

Following the success of the stories that formed The Weapon Shops of Isher, van Vogt wrote the novel, The Weapon Makers, in 1943, to enlarge the story of human immortality, the conflict between a controlling government, The House of Isher, the mysterious Weapon Shops and man's place in the universe. The promise of the Weapon Shops' slogan, The Right to Buy Weapons is the Right to Be Free, is described thus: "Many of these weapons still carried the old names. “Guns” they were called, or “revolvers,” or “rifles,” but there the resemblance ended. These “guns” did not shoot bullets, they discharged energy in many forms and quantities. Some of them could kill or destroy at a thousand miles if necessary, and yet they were controlled by the same sensitive elements as the Weapon Shop door. Just as the door refused to open for police officers, Imperial soldiers or people unfriendly to the Shops, so these guns had been set to fire only in self-defense, and against certain animals during open season. They also had other special qualities, particularly as to defense and speed of operation."

Die drei trennten sich, als sie ihn fast erreicht hatten. Einer blieb vor ihm stehen, die beiden anderen traten hinter ihn. Es waren diese beiden, die ihn packten und seine Hände fesselten. Sie zogen ihn hastig zu einer Tür. Fast hundert Meter lang ging es im Laufschritt weiter. Dann um eine Ecke und etwa zwanzig Meter diesen Korridor entlang - Halt, Grayson, der heftig atmete, sah, daß sie sich vor einer Tür befanden. Einer der Männer streckte die Hand aus - fast lässig, so schien es Grayson, nachdem sie so schnell gerannt waren - und klopfte an. Die Tür öffnete sich in völlige Dunkelheit. Eine Sekunde lang dachte er darüber nach. Und dann wurde er von hinten geschubst. Grayson ging durch die offene Tür, als sei es seine freie Entscheidung.
