Šerif Gentry řeší případ nepochopitelného masakru při němž zahynulo devět lidí. Na případu spolupracuje psychiatr Laski, který šerifovi a Natalií, dceři jednoho ze zavražděných, sděluje svá podezření. Domnívá se, že za masakrem stojí lidské zrůdy, které mají neobvyklou schopnost ovládnout mysl lidí a přinutit je vraždit. S takovým člověkem se Laski setkal v koncentračním táboře a je přesvědčen, že tento muž má prsty v masakru. Čtenář se postupně dovídá, že lidí s takovými schopnostmi je víc, že mezi sebou soupeří a, že jsou ve významných státních funkcích.
