Členové Caustonské amatérské divadelní společnosti před sebou mají náročnou premiéru – Shafferova Amadea – a závěrečné zkoušky pod vedením diktátorského šéfa souboru Harolda Winstanleye nevěští nic dobrého. Každou chvíli něco nefunguje, herci hrají mizerně a vztahy mezi nimi také nejsou ideální. Vypadá to však, že se na scéně snaží fyzicky ublížit některým svým hereckým kolegům. Pak přichází ona zásadní scéna: Esslynovi ovšem z krku vytryskne opravdová krev a on se kácí k zemi mrtev. Sebevraždu může Barnaby okamžitě vyloučit...
