This story was written in late '71, early '72. It's very moving even if it's never clear what's real & what's not. John Oxenshuer is sole survivor of the first US Mars expedition. His crewmates were killed in a sandstorm, bodies unrecovered. Tho considered heroic for his efforts to rescue them & his solo return, he's wracked with guilt & doubt. He packs up camping gear & heads out into the Mojave to get his head straight. He encounters a weird religious cult with a hidden desert community. Melding Xianity & Dionysian revelry, they seek union with Jesus thru indulgence in wine, dancing, wrestling & sex. They are completely peaceful. They welcome him, but he's unsure he wants what they offer. Collection first published 1975.
